So You Think Putting up Fences Is Easy?
What Does It Take to Work for a Fence Company?
No kind of formal education is needed to work for a fence company as an installer, although it helps to have at least a high school diploma. You will need to know some basic math skills and science skills too, although most of the methods used when installing fences can be learned whilst on the job. One good way to prepare yourself to work as a fence installer is to work in a wood shop or have some kind of carpentry skills; also, being familiar with tools will help to prepare you better for this kind of job.
One way to gain more experience is to become an apprentice for a fence installation company. You may not begin as an installer, however, you will be able to slowly work your way up if you work hard and learn the skills. Some end up working as a driver, counter help, delivery person, or as a customer service representative.
However, if it is your express desire to become a fence installer, it will be possible for you to learn these skills while on the job. Make sure you show up on time for work, are pleasant and work hard, this will show your supervisors you are ready and willing to learn the skills needed to become a fence installer.
There will come a time when you will start to work directly with a more experienced installer, that will teach you all the methods and techniques used with the installation. This could include meeting with customers, surveying the plot for any potential obstacles, taking precise measurements in order to determine how much fencing will be needed, determining what kind of fence would be best suited for the land, and eventually going through the installation process.
